The Criminal “Injustice” System
“The purpose of the Criminal Justice System is to punish those who break the law and so reinforce the all important difference between right and wrong, protect the public from crime and provide justice for those victimised by criminals”.
Quote by;
David Fraser, former English National Criminal Intelligence Service and author of “Badlands New Zealand; A Land fit for Criminals”
We New Zealanders need a major overhaul of our Criminal Justice System, the policies, the laws, the people, attitudes and expectations. Common sense has been thrown out the window.
The emphasis has to change from “criminals’ rights” to “victims’ rights”.
Criminal offending post WWII i.e. the 1950’s up to the present has increased astoundingly and is a harsh imposition on the immense number of unnecessary victims of crime.
In 1949 there were 19 offences for every thousand citizens, annually
By 2009 there were 101 offences for every thousand citizens, which is an increase fivefold or roughly one in ten of us on an annual basis.
In comparison look to Singapore as an example of what can be done.
Singapore; (figures for 2008) 6.9 offences for every thousand citizens.
New Zealand;(figure for 2009) 101 offences for every thousand citizens.
Sources; The Government of Singapore and New Zealand government Statistics.
Our current crime rate is a staggering some 14 to 15 times that of Singapore. To ignore these facts is to condone astounding callousness.
Apart from the physical and mental and financial hurt of victims there is the immense and unnecessary cost to the taxpayer of “out of control criminals”. A sum estimated at 12 billion dollars and that without taking into account the financial cost to victims of crime.
A reminder;
The Purpose of the Criminal Justice System is to punish those who break the law and so reinforce the all-important difference between right and wrong, protect we ‘the people” from crime and provide justice for those victimised by criminals.
Changes to current attitudes and practice;
*Evidence and common sense show that imprisonment is the most effective way to deter and to stop repeat offenders.
*First concern of the courts to be public safety.
*Concurrent sentencing has to stop.
*Parole abolished.
* The death penalty to be debated and could be the subject of a binding referendum
* Judges to be monitored and held accountable for their sentencing decisions when they place a criminal into the community that results in further crime by the criminal whilst serving their sentence.
* Politicians must insist on the law changes to be implemented to the letter.
* Victims of crime to have the right to sue the Crown for failure to protect them from crime.
* Civil servants opposed to changes to be removed.
* The Law Society to be reminded they are not the “lawmakers”.
Our Members of Parliament by foolish, misguided and incredibly naive policies have unnecessarily inflicted immense anguish on countless victims of crime.
We must hold them accountable.
